Ann Sheldon

Academic Coordinator

As the Academic Coordinator of the Neonatal Brain Disorders Laboratory, I oversee the day-to-day scientific and administrative functions of the lab.  I also perform experiments on the mechanisms of hypoxic preconditioning protection and therapeutic cooling in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.  My focus is the role of hypoxia-inducible factor 1a and the endogenous antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase.

In humans and in rodents the stage of brain development at the time of stroke plays a key role in the pattern of brain damage. We are interested to understand the role of the immune system in neurovascular changes and injury in perinatal arterial stroke and childhood arterial stroke.

I am a Staff Research Associate in the Ferriero Lab.  I work on the role of glutathione peroxidase in hypoxia - ischemia injury.  I am interested in hypothermia and its interaction with glutathione peroxidase for hypoxia - ischemia injury treatment.
